Decision map
Decision points to capture
A reliable review preserves the states surrounding the final action. These are the points where information, defaults, price or friction can materially change what a person sees and does.
- The account, help or support surface where a subscriber first looks for an ending method.
- The transition from information or retention content into an actual ending request.
- Every identity, consequence, balance, equipment or timing step required before confirmation.
- The final control that submits the request and states the effective ending date.
- The post-request state covering billing cessation, access, refunds, data and durable confirmation.
Recognition
Signals worth closer review
A signal is not a legal conclusion. It identifies a state or sequence that deserves evidence-led product and legal review in its complete context.
- Online or simple entry is paired with an ending route available only by limited-hours telephone contact.
- Labels and button placement change through repeated save offers or emotional pressure.
- Closing a retention prompt resets the request or sends the subscriber back to account home.
- The service collects new marketing information or demands an explanation before allowing completion.
- A confirmation screen appears without a durable receipt or corresponding contract and billing update.
Fairer design
Principles for a neutral journey
- Make every supplied ending method easy to find and keep the primary ending action stable through the route.
- Retain only steps supported by an ending function or a documented subscriber interest.
- Present optional retention offers once, clearly, without changing or blocking the requested action.
- Provide an online method when the section 48F(2) trigger applies to the same kind of subscription.
- State the effective date and consequences, then issue immediate durable confirmation tied to backend state.
Australian legal context
Keep the legal layers separate
Section 48F commences on 1 July 2027 for covered subscription contracts and subscribers. It requires at least one ending method, applies its quality standard to every method the supplier provides and adds an online method on its stated trigger. Regulations may prescribe exceptions. Existing ACL provisions can apply now on their own terms, and current proceedings remain allegations or findings under current law rather than section 48F enforcement. Section 28B overlap also requires its complete separate test.
